I&E Safety Specialist – Job Description

Position Summary:
The I&E Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring safe work practices related to all instrumentation and electrical (I&E) activities within the facility or project site. This role supports compliance with regulatory standards, company safety policies, and industry best practices while promoting a strong safety culture among technicians, contractors, and operations personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety Oversight & Compliance

  • Monitor and enforce safe work practices during all instrumentation and electrical tasks, including installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NEC, NFPA 70E, API, and other applicable regulations.
  • Conduct I&E field safety audits, inspections, and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).
  • Verify proper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical isolation, arc-flash protection, and grounding procedures.

Risk Management

  • Identify and assess hazards associated with I&E work and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Review procedures, electrical drawings, and permits for accuracy and safe execution.
  • Participate in incident investigations involving I&E equipment and provide root cause analysis.

Training & Competency

  • Provide training on electrical safety, instrumentation hazards, LOTO, and safe work practices.
  • Ensure personnel maintain required certifications and understand safe handling of electrical and control systems.

Technical Support

  • Support operations and maintenance teams in verifying safe installation and troubleshooting of instruments, control systems, motors, switchgear, and electrical equipment.
  • Assist engineering teams with safety considerations for new projects or equipment modifications.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, permits, corrective actions, and safety reports.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing safety trends and recommending enhancements to I&E safety programs.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or associate degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Engineering Technology, or related field (bachelor’s preferred).
  • 3–7 years of experience in instrumentation/electrical systems, safety, or industrial operations.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA electrical standards, NEC, NFPA 70/70E, and industry-specific codes.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, CESCP, or safety certifications (e.g., CHST, CSP) are highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, hazard recognition, and leadership skills.
