Job Summary

Shambaugh & Son is seeking a Fire Alarm & Special Hazards Estimator to join our team in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This role is a great opportunity for someone with experience or interest in fire alarm systems, electrical systems, construction estimating, or fire protection who enjoys working on a variety of projects from initial estimate through project execution.

 

In this position, you’ll prepare estimates and scopes of work for fire alarm, gas suppression, and special hazard systems while working closely with customers and internal project teams. You’ll review construction drawings and specifications, perform takeoffs and site surveys, develop preliminary system designs, and help ensure projects stay aligned with the original estimate.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective customers.
  • Develop detailed scopes of work and preliminary bid drawings based on customer and project requirements.
  • Conduct project site surveys, including documenting existing conditions, photographs, and measurements.
  • Develop high-level design calculations for estimated systems.
  • Complete project takeoffs using estimating software.
  • Assist with project management activities, including monitoring project progress and maintaining change orders.
  • Review engineered drawings to ensure alignment with the project estimate.
  • Prepare detailed scope letters customized for individual project bids.
  • Perform contract reviews and complete required project checklists for awarded work.
  • Support business development and customer relationship efforts.
  • Monitor project job-cost reports and identify potential issues.
  • Maintain communication with customers throughout the duration of projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Degree in a technical or business-related field preferred, or equivalent work experience. Relevant areas may include Engineering, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering/Technology, or Construction Management.
  • 1+ year of fire protection industry experience preferred.
  • 1+ year of project estimating experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Interest in electrical systems and fire protection technology.
  • AutoCAD experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Valid driver’s license and excellent driving record.
  • Regular and reliable attendance, including the ability to work extended hours and weekends as required
