We are a cleantech contractor that provides comprehensive energy efficiency services for energy service companies (ESCOs) and corporate clients. Our services are provided by six specialized units focused on weatherization, water efficiency engineering, lighting, airflow controls, HVAC, and infrastructure solutions.

Job Summary

ECM has an opening for a Senior Accountant in Oshkosh, WI. This position will be responsible for all accounting functions for two business units including accounts payable, accounts receivable, sales tax returns, general l.edger, monthly financial statement preparation, job costing, and various other accounting projects. To be successful as a Senior Accountant, you should have a solid working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and strong financial analysis skills. An outstanding Senior Accountant should also possess strong Excel skills, be detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to work with little to no supervision and perform under pressure. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Compliance

 

  • General Ledger Management: Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and proper recording of all transactions.
  • Month/Year-End Close: Lead or perform complex month-end and year-end closing procedures, including preparing and reviewing journal entries.
  • Account Reconciliations: Perform complex account reconciliations, especially for balance sheet accounts (e.g., fixed assets, investments, accruals).
  • Financial Statement Preparation: Prepare, analyze, and review financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows) for accuracy and compliance.
  • Compliance: Ensure all accounting operations comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or IFRS, and local/federal tax regulations.
  • Audit Support: Coordinate and assist with internal and external audits, preparing necessary work papers and liaising with auditors.

Analysis & Strategy

  • Variance Analysis: Conduct detailed variance analyses (Budget vs. Actual) and provide insightful explanations and recommendations.
  • Financial Analysis: Perform in-depth financial analysis, cash flow forecasting, and prepare ad-hoc financial reports for management.
  • Budgeting/Forecasting: Assist in the development, monitoring, and analysis of departmental or organizational budgets and forecasts.
  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline and improve accounting systems, policies, and procedures to enhance efficiency and internal controls.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting preferred
  • Must have 3-5 years of accounting experience
  • Construction accounting experience is strongly preferred
  • Federal, State, and local tax experience preferred
  • Advanced Excel Proficiency: Must be highly proficient in functions like VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, Pivot Tables, and complex formulas for data modeling, reconciliation, and large dataset manipulation.
  • System Expertise: Competency with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) and specialized accounting software. Knowing how to query data and troubleshoot system issues is key.
  • Problem-Solving & Investigation: The ability to independently research, diagnose, and resolve complex accounting discrepancies or unreconciled balances without constant supervision.
  • Documentation & Audit Readiness: Creating clear, organized, and comprehensive workpapers and supporting documentation that can withstand scrutiny from internal or external auditors.
  • Clear Communication: Translating complex accounting concepts into simple terms for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Time Management & Prioritization: Skillfully managing multiple simultaneous deadlines (e.g., close deadlines, audit requests, project deliverables) under pressure.
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) / IFRS: Deep working knowledge to ensure accurate financial reporting. This includes knowing when and how to apply specific complex rules (e.g., revenue recognition, lease accounting, business combinations).
  • Financial Statement Preparation & Analysis: Ability to prepare, review, and consolidate the Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows, and Statement of Stockholders' Equity. This also involves performing variance analysis (budget vs. actuals).
  • Month-End/Year-End Close: Expertise in managing and executing the full closing cycle, including complex accruals, reconciliations, and ensuring all entries are properly supported and posted timely.
  • Internal Controls (SOX/Other): Understanding and documenting internal controls over financial reporting to prevent fraud and errors. Familiarity with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance if working in a public company environment.
  • Tax Fundamentals: A working knowledge of basic corporate income tax concepts and how they relate to the general ledger and financial statements (e.g., deferred tax assets/liabilities).
  • Fixed Assets & Depreciation: Mastery of tracking, calculating, and recording depreciation/amortization methods and asset disposals.
