HVAC Take-Off Technician / Estimator

The HVAC Take-Off Technician is responsible for generating accurate and competitive cost estimates for mechanical systems across a variety of construction projects. This role is essential to the bidding and planning process, ensuring both profitability and adherence to technical specifications.

This position offers a clear path to advancement: candidates who consistently exceed expectations in their Take-Off Technician duties will have the opportunity to transition into an Estimator role.

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing the following regularly and/or as needed:

• Review and analyze project drawings, specifications, and scope documents to develop detailed cost estimates
• Perform on screen take-off duties as the primary job duty
• Quantify materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to ensure alignment on scope and pricing
• Solicit and evaluate bids from suppliers and subcontractors
• Assist in preparing/submitting bid proposals, budgets, and cost breakdowns
• Assist in preparation for pre-bid meetings and site visits to assess project conditions
• Maintain and update cost databases, historical pricing records, and estimating tools
• Support value engineering efforts and identify cost-saving opportunities
• Assist in post-award cost tracking and budget management

PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• High School diploma or equivalent required
• Minimum 3 years’ experience with on screen take-off within the HVAC industry
• Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Excel, Trimble, AutoBid, or similar)
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and contract documents
• Excellent analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills
• Strong communication and negotiation abilities
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Familiarity with local building codes and industry standards
• Experience with BIM and digital takeoff tools
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple estimates simultaneously
• Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
