Job Summary

DeBra-Kuempel is seeking to fill a Mechanical Estimator Co-op position in our Cincinnati, OH location.  This co-op position is designed for individuals interested in building a career in construction estimating. The Mechanical Estimating Co-op will assist the estimating team with basic tasks such as quantity take-offs, document organization, and learning to interpret construction drawings and specifications. Training will be provided for our estimating program Accubid and hands-on experiences with the team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in performing basic quantity take-offs under supervision.
  • Help organize and maintain estimating files and documentation.
  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Support the estimating team in preparing bid packages and proposals.
  • Attend site visits and pre-bid meetings with senior estimators.
  • Input data into estimating software and spreadsheets.
  • Communicate with vendors and subcontractors to gather pricing information.
  • Participate in training sessions and mentorship opportunities.
  • Maintain a professional and collaborative attitude in a team environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework in construction, engineering, or business preferred.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in construction estimating.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and take direction from senior staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present, negotiate, and build lasting client relationships.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Valid driver’s license required. 

TRAVEL

This position may require local travel to local job sites

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The role is primarily office-based but requires regular travel to customer sites, project locations, and field environments throughout the Columbus area. Office duties involve extended periods of sitting, computer use, and participation in meetings. Field visits may expose the employee to outdoor weather conditions, active construction sites, and industrial environments with potential exposure to dust, fumes, noise, moving mechanical and electrical parts, and varying temperatures. The noise level may range from moderate to loud depending on the location.

Physical requirements include the ability to walk, stand, climb ladders, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must have sufficient visual acuity for close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Regular commuting to job sites is required, and the employee must be able to safely navigate construction areas and maintain eligibility under the company’s Fleet and Driver policy. WORK SCOPE

The Mechanical Estimator Co-op will work side by side with experienced estimators and gain exposure to the fundamentals of construction estimating. This hands-on role provides opportunities to learn how to interpret drawings and specifications, understand quantity take-offs, and become familiar with estimating software and processes. The co-op will also observe and participate in bid preparation, vendor communication, and site visits, building a strong foundation for a future career in mechanical estimating.
